Oranges : Beyond Powerhouse Of Vitamin C

Oranges : Beyond Powerhouse Of Vitamin C

November marks the return of oranges to our tiffins and tables, cherished for their rich Vitamin C content, sweet tang, and juicy goodness. While we savor the fruit, it's easy to overlook the hidden potential within the orange peel.

The Fate of Orange Peels

Have you ever wondered what happens to orange peels once the fruit is consumed?

  • Goes in the Trash
  • Used for Making Jam or Marmalade
  • Frozen for Culinary Purposes
  • Transformed into a Face Pack
  • Put to Some Other Use
  • Is It of Any Use?

So what happened earlier at my home?

The Past: Orange Peels in the Trash

Until 2019, orange peels were discarded in the trash at my place. While I had heard of creative uses like face packs or candies made from peels, I lacked the time and interest in such efforts.

The Turning Point: Unveiling the Hidden Potential

Little did I know that these remnants from my favorite citrus fruit held the potential for something far more exciting. In our fast-paced world, time constraints and busy schedules often limit our exploration of innovative solutions. However, I was fortunate to stumble upon a remarkably simple, quick, and sustainable way to put orange peels to good use.

Creating Orange Peel Cleaner: A Green Transformation

This journey from peels to a cleaning solution, is a great example of how easily one can adopt environmentally friendly practices and make a difference. These cleaners from peals are, commonly known as bio-enzymes.

But is it really that simple?

Let's break down the process. The Five Steps to a Greener Solution

Step 1: Collect the Peels: Gather orange peels after enjoying the fruit.

Step 2: Choose Your Container:  Use an airtight plastic bottle or container, perhaps one previously destined for recycling, like soda or soft drink bottles

Step 3: Creating Your Orange Peel Cleaner: Combine three portions of orange peels, one portion of jaggery (a natural sweetener), and ten portions of water in your chosen container. Don’t forget to close it tightly.

Step 4: Witness the Transformation: Over the next 15 days, open the bottle cap daily until the fizz subsides. By day 90, a surprising transformation will have occurred. Your humble collection of orange peels and other ingredients will have transformed into a fragrant, chemical-free cleaner ready to tackle your cleaning needs.

Step 5: Filter and Use: After 90 days, filter the liquid and start using it as your regular surface cleaner, just like store-bought ones.

This sounds magical, but what is behind this magic?

The magic lies in the natural properties of orange peels, which contain essential oils like limonene, providing that distinctive citrus fragrance while possessing powerful cleaning and degreasing properties. The addition of jaggery kick-starts the fermentation process, allowing the orange peels to release their cleaning potential. The result? A homemade cleaner that's tough on grime but gentle on the environment.

Are there any other benefits other than this wonder cleaner?

This simple transformation of orange peels is not only about creating a cleaner; it signifies a shift toward a more sustainable, environmentally conscious way of life. Here are a few key advantages:

  • Waste Reduction

By repurposing orange peels that would otherwise end up in landfills, we actively reduce waste in a world where waste management is a pressing concern.

  • Chemical-Free Cleaning

Commercial cleaning products often contain harsh chemicals. By using the orange peel cleaner, we eliminate the need for these substances, creating a safer living environment for ourselves and our loved ones.

  • Positive Environmental Impact

By adopting sustainable practices like this, we contribute to a healthier planet. We reduce the demand for mass-produced, chemical-laden cleaning products, lessening their environmental impact.

So, what’s the final word?

Embrace the Magic of Orange Peels.  The next time you enjoy a juicy orange, think twice before discarding those peels into the trash. They might just hold the key to a cleaner, greener future. Embrace the magic of orange peels as a reminder of the transformative potential that lies within the
